Robert Steel

Robert Steele is Founder and Director of Systainability Asia, a Thailand based regional consultancy that works closely with national and local governments, NGOs, international agencies and private sector corporations and SMEs the Asia-Pacific region on how to do sustainable development.  This includes assisting them with stakeholder engagement processes, sustainability indicator development, sustainability-based strategic planning that incorporates a systems thinking approach, sustainability assessment, organisational strategic capacity evaluation and sustainability reporting.

Robert has been a Senior Associate with AtKisson Group since 2002 and has conducted over 60 ISIS Accelerator trainings throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Robert’s expertise lies in the fields of ESD, sustainability indicator development, systems thinking and organisational change, organizational sustainability assessment, strategic planning and communication, along with a strong background in earth sciences, ecology and resource management.

Robert arrived in Asia in 1997 to take the position of Director of Education for the Magic Eyes Chao Phraya Barge Program, a Thai NGO. In 2001, the experiential environmental education program he co-developed with his Thai colleagues was recognized by UNEP as one of six ‘best practice EE programs’ in the Asia-Pacific region.  In addition, the water ecology and water quality education program was honored by Canada Fund as one of the top 25 funded projects out of over 700 that they supported in Thailand during their time in Thailand.

In 2005, Robert founded Systainability Asia and has has developed it into one of South East Asia region’s top sustainability consultants, and now works with a number of regional governments (Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam), UNEP, UNDP, UNESCAP, UNESCO and ASEAN Secretariat, many regional NGOs and Southeast Asia based private sector companies on building sustainable development assessment frameworks and developing their sustainability strategic plans.

Robert’s expertise lies in the fields of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and sustainable development, including sustainability indicator development, monitoring and evaluation, systems thinking, organizational sustainability assessment, strategic planning and communication, along with a strong background in earth sciences, ecology and environmental management. Robert has authored and contributed to several key regional and international publications and papers.
